Community Structures, Phillips Academy Andover, Visual Studies, 9th Grade.

9th grade art students begin the term reflecting on their experiences in a community and identifying how to build successful community in the studio as well as at their new school. After material challenges and warm-ups, students are prompted to create a sculpture with material of their choice inspired by a landmark from a former community they belonged to. The goal of the project is to use material exploration and innovation to tell a story about their experience beyond creating a direct representation. Students engage in thoughtful discussions about artists Jean Baptiste, Ana Serrano, Lim Pui Wan, and Alfredo & Isabel Aquilizan. Students practice craft, drafting and construction as well as are challenged with creating a group installation with the individual works.
